How to Succeed as a Technical Writer

August 24, 2008 - 6:03 pm

If you have great passion for words and have a degree or diploma in any technology field, then your chances of success is beyond your wildest imaginations. You can be part of that clan of writers out there, who make anything from a thousand dollars to several thousands every month from writing technical articles online for freelance websites, building their brands and getting noticed.

It’s a really wonderful field of writing. And, with the advent of Internet and web publication technologies, the traditional text publication platform has tasted a whole revolution. Today, as an author you are free to publish anywhere at your own will. All you need is some talent in writing, which most of us inherently have.

However, in order to succeed, the most important thing is your brand. You may be a great writer offline, you may know it yourself, and possibly, your nearest friends may know of this fact as well. But the world doesn’t, your prospective client doesn’t. In such a scenario, come the freelance websites. These websites give you a platform to show off your merit and get sales for the content you make.

Examples of the best freelance websites are Guru.com, Elance.com, getafreelancer.com, and so many others. You may just do a search from Google and you will stumble upon a million of them.

What you need to succeed?

One and the most important thing you need for success in freelancing industry is a flawless language and an extensive vocabulary. This will come about as a result of a lot of reading. But do not read any ordinary web publication. You should strive hard to find out the best publications to read. Those, which can enrich your mind, give you some thoughts, and give you new words and ideas. There are not too many of them. And I assure you, top bloggers may not get one sentence correct!

So, look out for authentic sources to read or those sites or blogs, which help you in writing. There are many.

Secondly, you should have quality content in your writing. Writing anything would not make you successful. The quality comes inherently. Naturally. All you have to do is understand what you are writing about and do an in depth research on the topic. Find out the important information on the technology you are going to write about:

It’s advantages and disadvantages

It’s issues and glitches

It’s benefit on the ordinary people

The ways people may use to tweak it to their advantage

The ways to use the tool productively

Any issue with particular groups of people: like children, adults, senior citizens, etc.

Any future improvements

The general statistics of the service provider and the service itself

In any writing about technologies hitting the market and those already in, these points are very important.

To do the research, you can use tools like Google. Do an in depth search for all the terms associated with the technology and find out everything available related to it. Once you get enough information, should read through it. Reading will generate more ideas in you, and will strengthen your points. Start your writing only after you read your research content.

Topic to find

You can find out the topic of writing by various means. The best way is by looking at the current technology news from Fox News, CNN, New York Times, Reuters, BBC World, etc. Such news channels and their websites provide you with the latest happenings in the technology field. What you have to do is read through a specific interesting post and find out the proper keywords. Then do an in depth research on these keywords with Google and Wikipedia. You can get a number of research pages to concentrate your writing on. And such content-rich articles are what the people want, and what hit high in search results. So, they will be purchased for any price you set on them.

All the best to all those who wish to get successful technical writing careers.

How to Create a Professional Ebook Design

August 22, 2008 - 6:46 pm

When you publish a book, one of the most important parts of the e-book is the e-book cover design. It has to interest the potential reader to buy and read the book. To do this, you can either enlist the services of a graphic design compiler, or pay him a sum of money, or struggle with the different templates available in the internet. The best buy would be to use the Cover Factory Version 2 windows program that allows anybody to create a beautiful e-book cover design in minutes.

There are many services and people around to help you in building an e book. In building, it means giving the final touches to the e-book. They help in the proofreading and minor editing of the e book, in the choosing of the appropriate typestyle for the book and to create a unique e-book layout for the book that is as unique as the writer is. They also help in adjusting the paragraphs into smaller paragraphs to make onscreen reading easier and to format the e-book with the best quality of layout, graphics and type. All you have to do is to send the manuscript to them as an attachment to an email in any text or word processing format. In addition, it is best for you to the least formatting to the e-book as it is easier for them to start formatting on a clean slate. Depending on the amount of the work needed, the e-book is completed in a matter of 7-10 days. Discounts are available, while you get to choose the appropriate design within two or three days of the receipt of the manuscript. Changes in the design and e-book due to their mistakes are not charged to you whereas any changes you make are charged to you.

Once the e-book is done, comes the marketing of the e-book. There are quite a few marketing strategies around for you to try. You could list the e-book on the many free e-book directories available. You could also use the over 100 pay per click search engines to test and market the e-book. Alternatively, you could enlist the services of an e-book marketing firm to help market your book at a price!

People Building Newsletter No.2

August 21, 2008 - 7:55 pm

People Building is an NLP and Hypnotherapy Training company.

This month we have focused on the mind-boggling but fascinating world of quantum physics. This is an area which is covered in our Master Practitioner training and it’s much more interesting then it sounds! Once you delve into some of this stuff, you feel as if you’ll never view the world in the same way again!!

Quantum Physics

Quantum physics is the study of the tiniest bits of stuff in our universe, the minute building blocks of the matter around us. Quantum physicists came up with the phenomena known as the ‘Observer Effect’ - the idea that the way we observe something changes its very nature.

Scientists found that observing an electron will change its path because the act of observing light or radiation contains enough energy to disturb it. Also, in a famous study, scientists found that light can be seen as a wave or particle depending on the instrument that was being used to observe it.

What does this have to do with NLP?

Well, quantum physics suggests that we create the world around us. This relates to many of the principles underlying NLP. For example, the idea that we can control the way we experience our world through using our minds more effectively. Quantum physics supports NLP’s presupposition that the ‘map is not the territory’. It argues that we learn to construct our reality and that we each have our own separate reality that we create in our mind/brain. In other words, my world is very different to yours!! For example, story has it that when Christopher Columbus sailed up too the Caribbean, the natives were unable to see his boat as they had no concept of what a boat was.

A similar effect was also demonstrated in a study in which 2 groups of kittens were raised in an environment where they were exposed to only horizontal stripes or vertical bars. It was found that as adults, the cats exposed to horizontal stripes were unable to recognise the vertical bars and vice versa. The observer effect goes as far as to say that we do not even know that something exists until we observe it. So, there cannot be an absolute past or future.

Quantum physics argues that there are infinite numbers of probable pasts and futures, everything that could of happened did, but you choose the one you observe and create it. You cannot not change the world as it’s not possible to separate the observer from the observed.

Therefore if you change your observation you change the events and the meaning of the events in your past. Of course, this is precisely the aim of NLP therapeutic techniques such as Change Personal History - to change a persons observation or perception of past significant emotional events.

Ha Ha Ha!!!!

What NLP terminology really means…….

Metaphor - not quite what your actually talking about

Observer - somebody too lazy to get involved

Dissociation - a group or club you are no longer part of

8 Steps To Writing A Great Children’s Book Manuscript

August 21, 2008 - 3:32 pm

Let’s face it: some kids just don’t like to read. Increasingly, parents, teachers, librarians, and editors are looking for books that will appeal to reluctant readers. When I was writing The Best Books for Kids Who (Think They) Hate to Read (Random House), I read hundreds of children’s books, old and new, that I thought would fit the bill. I discovered that there are eight qualities possessed by great books for reluctant readers, and to my surprise some of my childhood favorites didn’t pass the test. If you can work at least three of the elements listed below into your book, it will have a good chance of being loved by all kids, even those to whom reading is a chore.

* Humor. Making kids laugh is essential to building a pleasant association with reading. But you need to understand what tickles kids’ funny bones at different ages. The humor in picture books is broad and very visual. Easy readers (and some picture books for ages 6 and up) begin to introduce verbal humor: wordplay, puns, double meanings. As kids move into the chapter book arena they can handle jokes that need a setup and a payoff that’s played out over several scenes. Dialogue, how characters react to each other, or the situation in which a character finds himself may be innately humorous.

* Well-Defined Characters. Many kids want to identify strongly with the characters in their books; for reluctant readers, this is essential. It doesn’t matter what the character looks like on the outside (be it space alien, a clown or a talking frog), on the inside this character needs to embody the perspective of the reader. This means the character is dealing with issues the reader might face, or seeing the world in a childlike way. Book characters must have multidimensional personalities with strengths and weaknesses in order for the reader to care about them and want to stick with them for the entire story. In nonfiction such as biographies, authors who find an element of their subject’s life that is relevant to the target audience have a better chance of reaching reluctant readers.

* Fast-Paced Plot. Kids who love to read don’t mind a story that takes a few chapters to unfold, but reluctant readers don’t have that much patience. The action needs to start in the first paragraph, and by the end of the first chapter the reader should know quite a bit about the main character and have a good idea about the conflict or problem that character will face. Subplots are fine for chapter books and up, but too many will get in the way of the forward movement of story. Keep the pages turning.

* Concise chapters. Ideally, each chapter should contain one clear event (or one specific point in nonfiction), and have an arc of its own (a beginning, middle and end). This makes reading even one chapter a satisfying experience. Chapters that end on a high note in the action will make the reader want to see what happens next. Episodic novels (where each chapter stands alone as a short story) are also good bets for reluctant readers. Richard Peck’s A Long Way from Chicago and Louis Sachar’s Sideways Stories from Wayside School are two middle grade examples.

* Kid Relevance. This applies to the themes and ideas that form the basis for plots or how an author approaches a nonfiction topic. These ideas should be relevant, meaningful, and applicable to the reader’s life. Instead of conveying a lesson your adult perspective tells you the reader needs to know, try using the reader’s frame of reference as a starting point. Write to your audience, not at them. And remember, books can be just for fun.

* Suitable Text. Depending on the age and ability of the reader, the text needs to be challenging but not overwhelming. Strive to write your story as clearly as you can, using active sentences and concrete nouns and verbs. When writing for a broad age range of reluctant readers (8-12, for example), make the vocabulary accessible to the younger end, but the interest level appealing to kids on the older end of the spectrum.

* Unique Presentation. Reluctant readers often choose nonfiction over fiction because it speaks to their personal interests. Finding a new or unusual slant to your topic helps keep that interest alive. Humor doesn’t hurt either. It’s Disgusting and We Ate It! True Food Facts from Around the World by James Solheim appeals to middle graders’ love of the gross while sneaking in some history on the side.

* Visual Appeal. Authors generally don’t have much say in a book’s design, but author/ illustrators might. Larger typeface, the generous use of white space, and illustrations that elaborate upon the text all help break up the string of words and make the book less intimidating to read.

How To Promote Your Books In Online World

August 20, 2008 - 11:01 am

Now I assume that you had published you first book, and you want to promote it. These are many way you can use to promote books online.

1. Make use of your signature online. Make sure you put your link to where your book can be found or purchased in your signature. In your email, you can link to websites, blogs, or whatever you want. Don’t make it too long, it’ll annoy the readers. And another important point is to make a post to relevant groups or forums.

2. Google and Yahoo group are the best places to go. Join the groups that are for readers and post often. The other will see your site through your signature

3. Go to chat spot and start chatting, Offer them a gift or related promotional items to come to your sites ( That where the address of your book.) If the chat is somethings about writing, offer them a critique. That will make your book more interesting in their point of view, just remember, people always love critique.

4. Try finding a related websites or blogs that are in your genre, offer them to do a reviews or maybe a short interview on their site or blog. If the blog has a very high traffic, the more people will see your book. Follow the golden rules of selling online, “the more traffic, the more sales”

5. Put up your own website or blog. You will argue me with this. You might say that you don’t want to afford the hosting or domain. I have to tell you that, your site or blog can be a huge different. Your book’s site will add the book more value from the customers’ eyes. What’s more is that when you publish another book just simple put it there, where your promoted site is. That make your life a lot more easier because you have to promote once and for all.

6. Create a mailing list. That way you can interactive with your readers. You don’t have to make a newsletter about your books or your goods. It’ll scared the readers away. Try to make if fun and friendly, convince them that you are their’s friend. The friend that introduces them a great books ( of yours, exactly) :)

7. In your blog (or your website, but I recommend you to setup it with Wordpress to use blog feature. It’s very easy for you because you don’t have to worry about on-page factor) try to write it as often as you can. If it possible, try to write it everyday, Visit other people blogs and don’t forget to comment on their’s blog. By doing this will keep him/her happy and the important thing is don’t forget to link back to your blog for his/her comment.

8. After you have finished setup your site, try to exchange your link with your author friends or others. That will make your site more visible to a horde of internet users.

9. Every time you finish reading a book, try writing a review article of it. You can submit it else where. That will make you backlinks.

10. Join the internet contests. Usually, It’s free. You don’t worry about winning the first place. If you don’t win, your title will be list anyway. So many more people are watching you!

Be friendly, Go everywhere and make friend. Be helpful to everybody. Giving your time. Pay respect to other and say them a congrats when they make a nice post or article. This is the most important thins I want to tell you above all. You will get help by many people, you’ll be the inspiration of the other, they’ll promote you without saying a word. Friendship rule the world :)

Writing For Greeting Cards

August 18, 2008 - 1:04 pm

Greeting cards are a wonderful way to express your feelings. They offer a way for us to say what we mean even if we cannot find the words ourselves, which is where greeting card writers come in. They do not receive a byline and never see their work published in national magazines, but they do produce some of the most widely read projects. Writing for greeting cards is especially nice because the word count is low and the pay can be as much, or more, than some publications.

If you want to write for greeting cards, the first thing to do is to become familiar with what is popular and what sells. A greeting card company will not hire you if your material is not fresh and unique. If you are just starting out as a writer and want to get your ink wet, so to speak, write what you know. The same is true when writing for greeting cards.

Your next step will be to find a company that is looking for freelance writers for greeting cards, which can often be found directly from the company’s website. Most have policies regarding freelance submissions and ask that content for greeting cards be submitted to a specific individual within the company. If accepted, your work will be compensated according to the company’s written policy on freelance writing.

So, just what are the most popular kinds of greeting cards? Holiday specific cards are always popular, as are those dealing with love and humor. Part of the charm of greeting cards is their ability to bring a smile to someone’s face. Perhaps it’s a long distance birthday wish or a humorous look at a special friendship. Maybe it’s a milestone anniversary that is being celebrated and a greeting card can provide the perfect words to express your feeling. These topics are always popular and these are the ones that are readily sought by publishers of greeting cards.

As a final thought with writing for greeting cards, avoid sending submissions at random. Some companies simply do not accept freelance submissions, so you will not want to waste your time with those. In addition, companies that do not offer monetary compensation are not the best choice because you do not receive a byline for greeting cards. Always submit to companies that are willing to pay freelance writers for their work. As you work with different editors, you will begin to gain a better understanding of the market and how writing for greeting cards can put a smile on your face and in your wallet.

A Writer

August 16, 2008 - 9:48 pm

Writers are very much in demand these days because of the rising demands for their online content. The pay is oftentimes better and the hours are not so long. Many even freelance full-time.

Freelance writing extends to several different categories. Before you begin looking for work, you’ll have to decide whether or not you want to get credit for your writing. If you insist on a byline, you may have difficulty finding a lot of paying jobs. Byline jobs are out there if you look. However, the most money to be made is from working as a web ghostwriter.

There are several different categories of freelance writing. When you see the term “content writing” you will normally be providing text for an existing or new website. Your writing will have to be engaging and clear for website visitors. Article writers concentrate on providing articles for websites, newsletters and blogs. Generally, articles for the web are between 400 and 800 words each. Any more than that is difficult for readers to sit through while looking at a computer screen. Copywriters are challenged with putting readers in the mood to buy. They write copy for Internet sales letters and marketing sites. Ebook ghostwriters provide clients with full-length books on a variety of topics.

Freelance writers need to be professional in their online presence. This means spell-checking all writing, including e-mails to clients. It is also a good idea to get an e-mail address that is specifically used for your writing. A personal e-mail address with a goofy handle will make you appear unprofessional. Your first and last name or a combination thereof is a good choice for your web writing e-mail address.

Writing for the Internet has a few differences from writing essays in school or writing for print magazines. Readers online have short attention spans, and you’ll need to keep your sentences short and your paragraphs clear.

The other difference is the use of “keywords” in certain writing assignments. Keywords are words that have been selected by your client to be used in the article. These words have been selected because they are Internet search terms and your client wants their website to show up for those search terms. Keyword articles will require you to use the word or phrase a certain number of times in the article. Sometimes it can be difficult to use the words without making it sound forced. Experienced web writers have developed ways to make the keywords flow naturally into their articles.

Below are some of the areas and industries where freelance writers are needed. Read on and find the freelance path that is right for you.

MAGAZINES

Freelance writers are frequently hired to contribute articles for magazines. In fact, this is one area where you can actually get regular assignments as a freelance writer especially if clients find your work good. The rate for every article is quite generous especially if it involves interviewing. Some writers even kill two birds with one stone by also taking photographs for the interview. This way, the client also pays for the pictures that accompany your article.

NEWSPAPER CORRESPONDENT

Another area where you can get freelance work is the newspapers, where editors often hire freelance correspondents (sometimes called “stringers”). This is especially true with areas that are outside the city. Newspapers find it cheaper to hire correspondents and pay for their services than to send their own staff writers to cover an event.

ONLINE WRITERS

As mentioned before, online writers are in demand nowadays because writers are needed to update website content. Magazines that maintain their own websites hire freelance writers just to do online content. In fact, not all the write ups you see on the Internet can be found in the magazines and not all articles in the magazines are used for online content.

PR WRITING

Public relations writing is a cost-effective way to advertise products. Because of this, companies hire writers to do their PR write ups for them.

BLOGGING

Blogging is yet another way to make money as a freelance writers. Blogs are an ever-growing form of Internet media. Blog writers generally provide their own content. You can make money as a freelancer by starting your own blog and posting to it daily. If you love to write, you can start several blogs at once and multiply your earnings. Once you become an experienced blogger, you can apply for blogging jobs and post for other people.

GHOSTWRITING

Many freelancers find success with ghostwriting. When you work as a freelance ghostwriter you provide writing services for clients who will then use the work as their own. Ghostwriting is a lucrative opportunity, especially when you focus on web writing. For the most part, the Internet is a text and image based platform. Companies and individuals who run websites constantly need text to make their websites attractive to visitors. Since writing is something that a lot of people would rather not do, this leaves plenty of opportunities for people who love to write.

Once you’ve gotten a few web writing assignments under your belt, you can decide what type of web writing suits you best. You can find work on writing message boards, freelance writing job sites, such as .FreelanceWriting.com, and classified ad sites like Craigslist.org. Whenever you apply for a job, make sure to include your contact information and a few well-selected writing samples.

Are You Talking To Me?

August 14, 2008 - 1:02 pm

In poetic literature you will often find a poem that seems to be inviting the reader to participate in an adventure or a love story. The use of ‘you’ is evident in the poetry, but in most cases the reader understands that the poem is written to a third party and the author is simply allowing you the opportunity to read these moments of intimate conversation.

Possessives in poetry, marked by an apostrophe, are a way to understand that the poem is written for and to another person &ndash even when written from a first person perspective.

There is, however, a unique form of writing called Authorial Intrusion that will find the author breaking away from the storyline and speaking directly to the reader. This technique is sometimes used to take a work of fiction and make it seem somehow real. This is accomplished when the storyteller breaks from the action to talk directly with you.

Authorial Intrusion can also be used in poetry and is used extensively in persuasive essays. In fact, in essays Authorial Intrusion is often used as a means of allowing a personal voice of persuasion to assist in the point being argued.

You can see the use of Authorial Intrusions in old detective movies where they step out of the shadows and talk to the audience about what they are thinking. This particular adaptation has been used for comic effect in recent years as it has been used extensively in film parodies.

As film and fiction writing have matured the use of Authorial Intrusion has diminished. Sometimes Authorial Intrusions make a work seem amateurish simply because the audience is informed of an impending scenario just before the scenario plays out. It can come across as redundant and unnecessary.

Here’s a short example of Authorial Intrusion…

“Ben had assumed there was nothing to fear on the plateau, but he didn’t see the grizzly bear approaching from behind.”

This particular example really isn’t needed in the context of the story. If the story is indeed Ben’s then allow the reader to experience the emotions Ben has when he makes the surprising discovery.

In the case of fiction writing Authorial Intrusions should be minimal in a worst-case scenario and eliminated altogether in a perfect world. When you choose a Point of View in which to tell the story it is best to allow that voice to remain as consistent as possible throughout the narrative.

Self Publishing: Is This The Way To Publish Your Book?

August 14, 2008 - 8:25 am

Self publishing might be the best way to publish your book. There are several advantages to self publishing that you might not have considered.

First, and most important, self publishing places you firmly in control of your book. When someone else is paying you to publish your book then they make many decisions regarding the editing of the manuscript, the cover, the title and the marketing that can impact not only how well your book will sell but also how it will be received by the reading public. For example, my second book ended up with the title “Kentucky Kisses” simply because my publisher’s marketing department reported that books with the word “kisses” in the title sold well. I felt the title was rather frivolous for the content but my wishes were ignored.

Self publishing is also faster than traditional publishing. With my novel, Kentucky Kisses, it took me over a year to find a publisher interested in buying and several months before we went to contract. Then after the contract was signed it was another 18 months before my book was released to the public. That is a long time to wait.

Self publishing also allows you to retain all the profits from your endeavor. While you may have to put some money up front (depending on the method you use to self publish your book) you will not have to wait for months or years to see income as a result. Most publishers only pay royalties once or twice a year and then those royalties are only a small percentage of the book price. When you self publish your book then once you have covered any publications costs everything you earn is pure profit.

Finally, it cannot be overlooked that self publishing offers you an opportunity to break into print that might not be otherwise available. The simple fact is that traditional publishing is highly competitive and many worthwhile manuscripts (and authors) cannot find a publishing home although there may well be an eager and receptive audience for that book.

It should be noted that self publishing may not be for everyone. If you are still struggling with your writing and voice, or your manuscript still needs polishing, then you should continue to work on your book and perhaps bring in the assistance of a critique group or professional editor. Self publishing a book that is not yet ready for publication could be a costly mistake. If your manuscript has been polished and well received by several critical readers then you should at least consider self publishing your book.

Not only does self publishing offer you the advantages of complete control, faster publication, and higher profits, it is easier and less expensive than it has ever been before thanks to modern technology. Self publishing could be your big break as a writer.

Discount Gucci Bags, Authentic Gucci Handbags

August 12, 2008 - 10:17 am

Designer handbags are rather popular when it comes to decorating the wardrobes of desperate housewives to flashy celebrities on Rodeo Drive. While there are tons of designer handbags to consider, there are few whose style, design, and reputation surpasses that of authentic Gucci handbags.

With a history deeply rooted in the early 1920s, authentic Gucci handbags didn
